 Civil Rights Tour

Footsteps To Freedom

This tour is a deeply moving and educational experience that honors the legacy of those who changed the course of history.

1st Day: Today, we begin our journey as we travel to Birmingham, AL. We will have time on our own this evening to rest and prepare for the beginning of our Civil Rights Tour.

2nd Day: This morning after breakfast, we'll have a guided tour of Birmingham. We begin the powerful and moving journey  at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church, the site of the tragic 1963 bombing that became a turning point in the fight for racial justice. Next, we take a guided walk through Kelly Ingram Park, where dramatic sculptures and installations tell the story of the struggles faced by peaceful protestors. We will have one last stop at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. This is an immersive museum that offers in-depth exhibits on the history of segregation, activism, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. We will say goodbye to Birmingham and make our way to Montgomery where another local guide will educate us about the history, Civil Rights movement, and some of Montgomery’s historical sites. This evening at the hotel, enjoy their complimentary hot appetizers and beverages. (CB)

3rd Day: Today, we have a guided tour that takes us to Selma through one of the most pivotal chapters in American history that follows the historic route of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March of 1965. We will stop along the way at the Lowndes Interpretive Center where engaging exhibits and multimedia presentations chronicle the courageous efforts of the marchers' struggle for voting rights and the sacrifices made along the way. Upon arriving in Selma, you will have the opportunity, if you choose, to walk across the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge, where the events of Bloody Sunday occurred ​​.The tour continues toward the Alabama State Capitol where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr delivered a stirring speech for justice and equality. The day concludes with a visit to Brown Chapel AME Church, the spiritual starting point of the march and a hub for organizing during the movement. A box lunch is provided during the tour. 4th Day: Today, before we start our journey to Atlanta,GA, we make a special stop at Priester's Pecans, a beloved Southern institution. You'll have time to explore their store, sample delicious pecan treats, and pick up some souvenirs. Priester's Pecans is definitely a stop worth talking about, known for its incredible Southern hospitality and delicious pecans. Upon arriving in Atlanta, we will have time at the hotel on your own before departing for dinner. Tonight, we will dine at Paschal's Restaurant, serving some of Georgia's most legendary fried chicken. Paschal's was a key meeting place for civil rights activists throughout the 60's and 70's. 5th Day: This morning, we will visit Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and The King Center. You will have time on your own to explore both the Park and the King Center, and to pay your respects at the final resting place of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King. The Center, established by Coretta Scott King in 1968, preserves his legacy and dream of nonviolent social change. We will then depart for home, arriving back approximately 7:30 PM. (CB)
