National Museum of African American History and Culture

1st Day: We travel to Washington, DC today to begin our two day visit to the Smithsonian Institutes’s newest museum – the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The museum is a place where all Americans can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience, what it means to their lives and how it helped us shape this nation.Aplacethattranscendstheboundariesofraceandculture that divide us, and becomes a lens into a story that unites us all. Some of the displays you can see are: the weathered wood cabin used during the period of slavery at Point of Pines Plantation on Edisto Island, SC; a log cabin of free slaves from Poolesville, MD; a menacing prison guard tower; a segregation-era railway car; and an airplane used by Tuskegee Airmen. There are interactive exhibitions and thousands of artifacts related to African American history. The building’s upper levels offer views of the Mall and the Washington Monument. 2nd Day: This morning we will return to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, to continue exploring all this museum has to offer. There are 85,000 square feet of exhibition space, nearly 3,000 objects, 12 exhibitions, 13 different interactives with 17 stations, and 183 videos housed on five floors. You may also visit any of the other Smithsonian Museums on your own. Departing for home after lunch today, arriving back at approximately 9:30 PM. (CB)
