African American History Tour

Savannah, Georgia

1st Day: We’ll travel to historic Savannah, GA today. This afternoon we will enjoy a guided tour with a focus on Savannah’s African American History. The tour will start at the African American Monument located at the Savannah River, and will also highlight places where enslaved Africans dwelled as they toiled in plantations and mansions throughout Savannah and the Georgia coast. Following the tour, we’ll check into our home for the night, located in the historic district of Savannah. Evening is free for your enjoyment. There are many excellent local restaurants to choose from in the historic district area.

2nd Day: We depart this morning with our guide to the Pin Point Heritage Museum, located in the old A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory. This is your chance to experience the Gullah/Geechee culture first hand. For nearly 100 years, the community of Pin Point was quietly isolated on the banks of the Moon River just south of Savannah. Now, you can explore the refurbished museum complex and experience multimedia presentations, exciting exhibits and unparalleled views of the marsh! We’ll head back into Savannah where you will have lunch on your own and a little free time to look around in the historic district area. This afternoon we will visit the First African Baptist Church, a must see, and the site of the Underground Railroad. The Church has many historical pieces. Balcony pews are original to the church, made by slaves. The lighting fixtures, 1832 Pipe Organ, and the baptismal pool are all original as well. Cursive Hebrew (African dialect) markings are seen on the original balcony pews, and the ceiling of the church has a “Nine Patch Quilt” design, representing the church as a safe house for slaves. Departing for home this afternoon. Arriving back approximately 11:00 PM. (CB)

Special Notice: Balance due 30 days prior to departure. Cancellation within 30 days of departure will result in payment forfeiture.
