Provincetown & Plymouth 400th Anniversaries

1st Day: Today we travel to New Jersey for our first night. Evening is free.

2nd Day: Welcome to Massachusetts, the “Bay State”, and the sandy shores of Cape Cod. In early November 1620, after two grueling months at sea, the Mayflower approached the tip of Cape Cod. For two days they tried to sail south but the treacherous waters along the Cape’s outer coast forced them to return to the tip’s safe harbor. Dinner is included this evening. (CB, D)

3rd Day: A Local Guide will meet us at the hotel. You will travel historic Route 6A, the Old King’s Highway, a scenic byway winding through centuries of Cape Cod history. It winds past hundreds of historic structures which characterize its early development. View the Eastham Windmill, a Cape Cod Lighthouse and visit the Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor’s Center. Hear the Pilgrim’s stories of Corn Hill, First Encounter Beach, Pilgrim Spring and Pond and their First Landing site. Sand dunes and the ocean surround you as you approach “Land’s End” – Provincetown. You are now at the extreme tip of Cape Cod. Formerly known as the “Province Lands”, the Pilgrims landed here first before they decided to settle across the Bay in Plymouth. The story started here in 1620 where the Pilgrims spent their first five weeks exploring Cape Cod. It was here that they signed the Mayflower Compact... the catalyst for American democracy. Lunch is on your own today. Take time to view the Bas Relief Monument and Park commemorating the first landing and the signing of the Compact. Visit Pilgrim Monument & Provincetown Museum. This 255-foot tower that dominates the town is the tallest granite structure in the United States. The walk to the top is 116 steps and 60 ramps. Should you choose to climb, you will see many interior stones that were donated by cities, towns and organizations from all over the United States. The Provincetown Museum exhibits highlight the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the town’s rich maritime history and the building of the monument. There is also a re-creation of a 19th century sea captain’s parlor at home and his quarters at sea as well as a diorama of the Mayflower Compact being signed aboard the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor. This afternoon you will travel to the “south side” of the Cape to the seaside village of Chatham. You will view the Chatham Light, which has been a lifesaving beacon for sailors throughout the Cape’s history. Chatham’s location at the Cape’s “elbow” make it very vulnerable to winter storms and your guide will point out the Chatham Break and the dramatic changes to the shoreline that have occurred, thanks to Mother Nature. Admission is included to visit the Atwood House Museum. Built in the 1750’s by Joseph Atwood, a Chatham Sea Captain, the “Old House” was occupied for five generations. The museum is a vibrant institution showcasing eleven galleries and a working Fresnel lantern from one of the historic Chatham Twin Lights. Dinner is included this evening. (B, D)

4th Day: Our Local Guide will again meet us at the hotel for a day of touring the first Cape Towns, HYANNIS and SANDWICH. All Cape Cod Towns were founded by people unhappy with the Boston-area Puritans. The clan of Wampanoag Indian, who lived here sold the land title. Over the next 20 years settlers spread north and south from Plymouth. The first parts of Cape Cod to be settled were the bay-side sections of Sandwich, Barnstable, and Yarmouth (all incorporated in 1639), along an old Indian trail that is now Route 6A. Most of the newcomers hunted, farmed, and fished. Salt hay from the marshes was used to feed cattle and roof houses. We’ll travel though SANDWICH – the oldest town on Cape Cod. Hear stories of the Puritans, Quakers, Shawme, Dexter Grist Mill, Hoxie House and the First Church of Christ. Travel a short distance to America’s Hometown – PLYMOUTH. Home of our Pilgrim Fathers and one of the country’s first settlements. A picture stop will be made at the Forefather’s Monument, the largest, solid granite monument in the United States. She stands facing the harbor, welcoming those who come by water. There will be free time for lunch on your own on the waterfront. Our guide will conduct a tour of the area viewing historical sites like the Governor William Bradford Statue, Hedge House, Pilgrim Mother Statue, Coles Hill, Massasoit Statue, Immigrant Monument, United American Indian of New England Plaque, Pilgrim Maiden Statue, Howland House, Spooner House, 1820 Courthouse, Pilgrim Sarcophagus and the Mayflower Society. Admission is included to Plimoth Plantation, the first permanent European settlement in Southern New England. It is the site of a living museum dedicated to recreating 17th century life ways in the New World with the Wampanoag’s. Step back in time as costumed interpreters portray residents of the colony. A traditional Turkey Dinner with all the fixings is included at the Plantation. During dinner enjoy a “Dress a Pilgrim” demonstration. (B, D)

5th Day: This morning we will head back to Plymouth with our Local Guide. Photo stops will be made at Plymouth Rock, the traditional site of disembarkation of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower II, a reproduction of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to the New World. Then, we’ll board a Lobster Tales Cruise to learn about the many creatures that live in Plymouth Harbor. Experience a “hands on” approach to see how lobsters are harvested from their natural environment. The naturalist will teach you about the food from the ocean as the Wampanoags taught the Pilgrims. There will be free time for lunch on your own. This afternoon we’ll visit Pilgrim Hall Museum. Built in 1824, this gallery museum is the nation’s oldest continuously operating public museum. Pilgrim Hall houses an unmatched collection of Pilgrim possessions. Dinner is on your own this evening back in Hyannis. (B)

6th Day: We depart Massachusetts this morning and head to Lancaster, PA. We will be traveling through Connecticut and New York State on our way to Pennsylvania. Upon arrival we will check into our hotel for the night. Included tonight will be an Amish Feast. (B, D)

7th Day: Good morning! Have breakfast and board the coach for our return trip home. Arriving back approximately 7:00 PM. (CB)

Special Notice: Balance is due 30 days prior to departure. Cancellation within 30 days of departure will result in payment forfeiture.
