We begin our local adventure, ready to dive into the unique history and distinct character that Winston-Salem proudly holds. Our day starts with a stop at a beloved local bakery, where the aroma of warm bread and freshly pulled espresso greets us at the door. Energized, we step back into the 1700s, arriving at Old Salem Museums & Gardens. You will have time to explore the historic district at your leisure. This isn't just a village; it's a living, breathing testament to the ingenuity and faith of the Moravian settlers. Expect to see skilled artisans demonstrating traditional 18th and 19th-century trades such as a Tinsmith shaping metal into household goods or a Potter working with clay to create Moravian redware. Next, we’ll stop at Reynolda Village, where you can explore the charming streets at your leisure. This is a wonderful opportunity to see local art and find hand-crafted gifts as you browse the unique boutique shops, galleries, and artisan stores scattered throughout the village. You can also enjoy lunch on your own at one of the village's many unique eateries. Our next stop is Körner’s Folly. Rising unexpectedly from a quiet neighborhood, this eccentric 1880s mansion is the creation of artist and designer Jule Körner. Inside, staircases twist and turn at surprising angles, ceilings rise and fall in playful arcs, and each room offers a new delight—from intricate woodwork to hidden nooks. At the top, the attic’s Cupid’s Park Theatre sparks wonder, a miniature playhouse where creativity dances in every corner. Touring Körner’s Folly is like stepping inside a storybook, where art, whimsy, and history converge in perfect harmony. We return home with the whimsical imagery of Körner’s Folly fresh in our minds, carrying with us a deep appreciation for the storied past of Old Salem. From the steadfast faith and craftsmanship of Moravian pioneers to grand industrial estates and an artist's visionary dreams, we leave today having touched three centuries of North Carolina's vibrant soul.
