Delaware Mansions & Gardens

1st Day: We begin our journey north through Virginia and Maryland with rest and meal stops along the way before arriving in Wilmington, Delaware, our home for the next 3 nights. 

2nd Day: After breakfast at the hotel, we will visit Nemours Mansion which stands like a little slice of Old-World European royalty. Built by Alfred du Pont, the 102-room home was inspired by Versailles' Petit Tiranon, the Neoclassical mansion where Marie Antoinette found refuge from the court of Louis XVI. Filled with precious 18th century furniture, the home is graced with formal French gardens that offer dramatic views of gilded statues and sparkling fountains. This afternoon, we will head to Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library - home to 60 acres of naturalistic gardens and 175 rooms filled with historic displays, all focusing on specific periods of the decorative arts. We'll begin our visit with a box lunch before exploring everything the Winterthur has to offer. The magic extends to the grounds, where visitors ride open tram cars through the meticulously designed gardens, and children (or children at heart) can play in the magical Enchanted Woods. The lush hills erupt with blossoms each spring, inviting visitors to wander the flower-filled trails. (CB, BL)

3rd Day: This morning we begin our day at the Hagley Museum. The du Pont family, one of America's wealthiest and most influential industrial dynasties, built a legacy through the chemical company DuPont, which started as a gunpowder business. You will see the gunpowder mills and workers' quarters here along Brandywine Creek, and learn the industrial giant's story through engaging exhibits. Enjoy a stroll through the gardens and visit the original family mansion. This afternoon, we will visit the Mt. Cuba Center, home of lush botanical gardens that feature some of the region's most beautiful native plants. We will enjoy a 1-hour narrated Hayride Highlights Tour as we roll through the wooded hills of Northern Delaware. This hidden gem is an ideal location to relax and enjoy all the beauty that nature has to offer. After our day of touring, we will enjoy a wonderful dinner at Jessop's Tavern. The three-hundred-year-old building was originally built in 1674. A cooper named Abraham Jessop lived here and worked at his barrel-making business in 1724. The menu reflects English, Dutch, Belgian, and Swedish presence in the region. (CB, D)

4th Day: After breakfast we will start our return trip to North Carolina with rest and meal stops along the way. Arriving home approximately 10:00 PM. (CB)
